There is nothing new here for the avid Custer fan, but the way in which McMurtry pulls it altogether is worth reading. The question is, do we need another bio of Crazy horse? We already have Vestal, Sandoz, and others who have chronicled the life of this famous warrior. I guess we will have to read the book in order to determine if it adds anything to the Custer literature.
In this issue Larry McMurtry, the author of Lonsome Dove and The Last Picture Show, presents an excerpt from his new biography, Crazy Horse, published by Viking Penguin. In this article McMurtry attempts to get into the minds of the major players of the battle and analyze the events leading up to the Little Big Horn in order to make some sense of what eventually transpired. This excerpt is obviously taken from the introductory chapter of the novel.
