Colby, Kansas

The next stop going east along Interstate 70 is Colby, Kansas, the "Oasis on the Plains ."  Colby is the county seat for Thomas  County, and provides the opportunity for one to either continue along  I-70 or as I chose,  go north to visit Cottonwood Ranch and Nicodemus.

The City of Colby, with a population of 5400 is a city of the 2nd class under Kansas State Statutes. The community was founded in October of 1885, named in honor of J. R. Colby, and is located at the intersection of Kansas Highway #25 and Interstate 70 in Northwest Kansas. Colby is located 220 miles east of Denver, Colorado and 375 miles west of Kansas City, Kansas.

A "must see" attraction in Colby is the Prairie Museum of Art and History which gives the visitor a glimpse of what pioneer life in Kansas was like.  Do not miss it! If time allows, a wealth of information about the local area is available at the Pioneer Memorial Library.
