The Ghost Dance Revisited

Glasgow, Scotland:

The Glascow City Council approved the return of a Sioux warrior shirt from the 1890 Wounded Knee battle. The "ghost shirt," which Indian fighters believed would protect them in battle, has been exhibited in the city's Kelvin-grove Art Gallery since Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show left it there in 1891. The shirt is said to be stained with the blood of a slain warrior.

Councilmembers unanimously approved the decision to return the shirt, after a plea by Sioux leaders. The effort to have the shirt returned to the Sioux began in 1991, when the tribe discovered that it was at the museum. A Mr. John Earl, an American, first discovered the shirt in the museum. "Its like a great thanksgiving," said Marcella Le Beau, secretary of the Wounded Knee Association.
