HAIL KIWANIS SONG

Kiwanis Korner: CAL-NEV-HA History

In May of 1917, Kiwanis came to California. The primary purpose was to teach, in a language the average man could understand and bring to full fruition, the basic principle of an unselfish interest in the other fellow. Just how Kiwanis came to California is a matter of historical interest. Shortly prior to May of 1917, W.W. Widenham and Paul Jesbury of Los Angeles made trips to the East where they came into contact with Kiwains Clubs. They then make contact with Allen Browne, who had organized several clubs in the East. On May 16, E.F. Wescott and Alvah Stimmers came to Los Angeles to assist in the organization of a Kiwanis Club.

At noon on June 6, twelve men met at the Clark Hotel and perfected the temporary organization of the club. J.R. Miller was the temporary president and Albert Monel was the temporary secretary. On August 24, the club elected permanent officers to serve until March 1, 1918. In September, with the membership of about sixty, the new club adopted its Bylaws and began to plan activities.

The District was officially recognized, with the pledge of 40 clubs in California, at the Providence Convention in June 1918, and W.W. Widenham was appointed District Governor. On June 19, 1919, the Los Angeles Kiwanis Club, with a membership of one hundred, received its charter from International and became the 67th club in Kiwanis International.

On March 24, 1923, Reno became affiliated with the District and the International Board approved the California - Nevada District on December 5, 1924. The Honolulu Club was organized in May 1947, and the Island Clubs became the Hawaii Division of Kiwanis International. On May 11, 1950 the Hawaiian Division requested affiliation with California - Nevada District. At the District Convention in Santa Cruz on October 10, 1950, the District Board approved the request. Kiwanis International approved the request on October 29, 1950 and voted to approve the name of California - Nevada - Hawaii District as of January 1, 1951.

-If each member contributes a little, then the club contributes a lot to the children of the community

New Year New  Goals:

Formerly Total K Day

Every Kiwanis club should reserve the date of Saturday, April 7, 2007, for the launch of a major new Kiwanis service initiative.  That’s the date chosen for the first Kiwanis One Day.  Think of the impact of more than 600,000 Kiwanis family members can make in one day of united service.

Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation

The Foundation is providing funds to train physicians in the specialized field of Pediatric Emergency medicine by providing $186,000 for a medical fellowship at Loma Linda University Children's Hospital.  Dr. Andrea Thorp has been chosen for the fellowship, and will train additional doctors in the District.  This is the result of the grant application submitted by Cindy Williams with assistance from Bob Erikson.  According to Bob, this is what Kiwanis is all about, serving children.  Kudos to Cindy for a job well done!

A BLAST FROM THE PAST:

New Kiwanis Club formed: Foundation donates $10,000 to Children’s Hospital

The California/Nevada/Hawaii Kiwanis Foundation donated $10,000 to Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital on Thursday, March 22.

The gift was given in support of the Children’s Hospital pediatric trauma program. Pediatric trauma is one of many children’s programs that Kiwanis supports. The gift was presented to Norman McBride, MBA, vice president, LLUMC, and Connie Cunningham, administrative director of emergency and trauma services, at the Kiwanis district meeting held at the Radisson Hotel in San Bernardino.

The CA-NEV-HA Foundation benefits four children’s hospitals in California, with special emphasis on prevention.

“Their focus on pediatric trauma gives tremendous support to our program here and has the promise of further benefit to the Children’s Hospital in the future,” says Mr. McBride.

Kiwanis is a worldwide community service organization with more than 300,000 members. Kiwanis clubs accomplish their goals through sponsorship of a wide range of projects. Each club selects its projects depending upon the particular needs of the individual community.

While projects vary from one club to another, representative projects/recipients of support include Children’s Miracle Network, Worldwide Eradication of Iodine Deficiency Disorder, Meals on Wheels, YMCA, Adopt-A-Highway, Special Olympics, and college scholarships.

At the same district meeting, a new Kiwanis Club was chartered to meet the needs of young people in Loma Linda. The new club is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Yucaipa. The club currently meets every Tuesday at 7:00 a.m. at the Denny’s Restaurant located just off of Interstate 10 at Alabama Street.

“Our membership is growing and we continue to seek men and women who have a heart for helping children,” says Kurt Meyer, MBA, president of the new club. “While our mission is very serious, our goal is to have fun and good fellowship in the process.”

A number of individuals from the University and the Medical Center are charter members of this new club, including Mark Hubbard, vice president for risk management, LLUAHSC; George Johnston, PhD, executive director of administration/risk management; Reiner Roeske, director of the LLUCH Foundation; Mike Cervantes, MSW, clinical social worker in heart transplant and dialysis; Donna Gurule, MPH, director of hazardous material safety, LLUAHSC; and Ron Siagian, associate manager of customer relations for printing services, LLU.

“We are so pleased to be affiliated with the Loma Linda Valley Kiwanis Club and are truly grateful for the generous gift which will purchase equipment vital to the expansion and growth of the Loma Linda emergency department,” Mr. Roeske says.
